Care Essentials

Light

Bougainvillea bonsai loves full sun and needs at least 5–6 hours of direct sunlight daily to bloom well. Place it outdoors in a sunny spot—lack of sunlight is the number one reason for poor flowering.

Watering

Water thoroughly only when the soil becomes dry. Bougainvillea’s do not like wet feet and are drought-tolerant. Let the topsoil dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering—this is a common mistake.

Soil

Use a well-draining bonsai soil. A mix of akadama, pumice, and coarse sand or perlite works well to prevent root rot.

Fertilizer

Feed every 2 weeks during the growing season with a high-phosphorus fertilizer to encourage blooming. Use a balanced fertilizer in spring and summer, and reduce feeding in winter.

Repotting

Repot every 2–3 years in spring before new growth starts. Bougainvillea has brittle roots, so handle gently and do not over-prune the roots.

Pruning & Shaping

Prune after each blooming cycle to encourage new growth and more flowers. Bougainvillea responds well to wiring but be cautious—branches are brittle and can snap easily. Use guy wires if necessary.
